Whether you’re creating a preschool supplies list or getting ready for back to school, remember that every small step counts. Choose organic school supplies, prioritize sustainability, and lead by example. By making these eco-friendly choices, we can create a better world for our children and future generations.
Why Bother?
Not only does it instill a sense of environmental responsibility in them from an early age, but it also helps in creating a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
Additionally, some mainstream brands are behind the ball when it comes to removing harmful chemicals from their products. This can have negative side effects on your child’s health. Many of these chemicals are banned from childrens toys, yet they are allowed in their school supplies.
In this blog post, I will share 6 must-have, ethically sourced and sustainable school supplies for preschool that are both affordable, health conscious and planet-friendly. Whether you’re creating a preschool supplies list or preparing for back to school, these organic school supplies will ensure your child starts their educational journey on an eco-friendly note.
1. Backpacks Free of “Forever Chemical” (PFAS):
I bet you didn’t know that most backpacks are treated with chemicals including Phthalates, PVC, PFAS, Lead, BPA, etc. I say this because I had no idea. These chemicals act as waterproofing or fire retardant but the side effects they have on our health are not worth the small convenience of waterproofing. Clearly, a backpack is an essential school item. So look for backpacks made from recycled materials, natural fibers like organic cotton or hemp. These backpacks are not only durable but also help reduce waste and promote sustainable fashion. Adding eco-friendly backpacks to your preschool supplies list ensures an eco-conscious start to the school year.
2. Reusable Snack Containers:
Honestly, packing lunch for a preschooler can be a pain in ass. Especially during the peak of Covid when teachers were trying to limit contact with the children’s items. These containers are a life saver. They wash easily, your toddler can open them on their own and they aren’t big and bulky like tupper-ware. No need to use zip-locks or buy those little individual baggies of gold fish, nuts, pretzels etc. Eliminate all that plastic-waste and use these guys everyday. They even have characters like Frozen and Paw Patrol and awesome graphic designs as well.
3. Non-Toxic Art Supplies:
Preschoolers love expressing their creativity through art, so it’s essential to opt for non-toxic art supplies. Especially if your child is anything like mine and casually tries to take a nibble of their supplies. Choose crayons, markers, and paints that are free from harmful chemicals like lead, phthalates, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Look for art supplies made from natural and plant-based materials. These organic school supplies ensure a safe and eco-friendly art experience.
4. Reusable Water Bottles:
Obviously, staying hydrated throughout the day is crucial for young children. Instead of single-use plastic bottles, invest in reusable water bottles made from stainless steel or BPA-free plastic. These bottles are leak proof, durable, eco-friendly, and can be easily cleaned, making them perfect for little ones. Adding reusable water bottles to your preschool supplies list encourages a sustainable hydration routine.
5. Non-Toxic Lunchboxes:
When packing lunches for your little one, consider lunchboxes made from materials like wheat straw, stainless steel, or renewable sources. Alternatively, if you opt for plastic, make sure that the product is BPA, Lead, PVC, PFAS, phthalate free like Bentgo’s products. These lunchboxes are durable, easy to clean, and provide a greener option.
6. Capsule Wardrobes
Capsule wardrobes are made up of a limited number of clothing items, that all match so many outfits can be made from them. These capsule wardrobes are great for a multitude of reasons, such as – less laundry to do and less clothes in the landfills. You can spend your money on better quality, more durable, ethically sourced and organic clothing. Check out my post “How A Toddler Capsule Wardrobe Saved My Sanity” to see some examples of how to construct a Capsule Wardrobe for your kids. Alternatively, consider shopping at second hand stores. You can get some amazing finds at kids consignment shops because they typically only take things in good shape. Half the time I find clothes that have never been worn. Its also easier to make a capsule wardrobe there because you can walk around and match colors.
Bonus Back to School Must Have – Labels
Labels serve a few purposes. Avoids losing items, and the spread of germs. It also removes the use of one-time labeling. Many daycares and preschools require items to be labeled, and while painter’s tape and a sharpie will do, it won’t be dishwasher or washing machine safe. If your child has an allergy you can customize labels specifically for that to ensure there’s no miscommunication. Mabel’s Labels are a great option as they have so many different types of labels, as well as medical bracelets, water bottle bands, bag tags etc. Click the link below for my friends and family discount.
